Freedmen's Bureau Indenture Bonds for Hempstead, Arkansas

Indentures of apprenticeship were preprinted or hand written forms giving pertinent data concerning the contractual parties, dates of apprenticeship, and including a statement of the obligations and responsibilities of each party.

                                                         To all whom it may concern

Greeting:

     This indenture made and entered into on this tenth day of October in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Sixty Seven at Washington in the County of Hempstead in the State of Arkansas by and between Fred W. Thibaut second lieutenant United States Army, Superintendent of Freedmen's, Refugees, etc, and ex officio guardian of one Harriet Norwood, a freed girl, an orphan minor having no estate for her maintenance and education, aged nine years, and William G. John of said County of Hempstead in the state of Arkansas-Witnesseth-

     That the said Fred W. Thibaut, by nature of his authority of such guardian as aforesaid does hereby put, place and bind out the said Harriet Norwood, minor orphan, as aforesaid to the said William G. John to learn the art of housekeeping, cooking, washing, ironing and sewing-from the date hereof until the said Harriet Norwood shall arrive at the age of eighteen years-during all of which time the said Harriet Norwood shall well and faithfully serve the said William G. John, and everywhere and at all times obey his lawful commands. She shall do no damage to the said William G. John, nor willfully suffer any to be done by others. She shall not waste the goods or property of the said John nor lend the same to anyone-She shall not contract matrimony during the period for which she is hereby apprenticed without the knowledge and consent of the said John. She shall not absent herself from the service of said John; but shall in all things and at all times behave and conduct herself as a good and faithful apprentice ought to do during the term aforesaid.

     And the said William G. John on his part, does hereby covenant, promise and agree, to teach and instruct the said Harriet Norwood or cause her to be taught and instructed in the art or business of housekeeping, cooking, washing, ironing and sewing; to well and faithfully provide for the said apprentice sufficient meat, drink, clothing, lodging and all other necessaries fit and suitable for such apprentice, during the period of time aforesaid.

     And the said William G. John does hereby further covenant and bind himself to teach said apprentice or cause her to be taught reading, writing and arithmetic to the rule of three inclusive.

     In testimony whereof we have hereto set our hands and affixed our seals at Washington in the County of Hempstead in the State of Arkansas, this tenth day of October in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Sixty Seven.

October 10, 1867. Frank Vickers, age 7, bound to Robert G. Adams, a citizen of Cass County in the State of Missouri, at present residing in Hempstead, Ark, until the age of 21.

October 16, 1867. Edmond Powell, age 11, bound to Hiram Powell of Hempstead, Arkansas until the age of 21.

November 6, 1867. Hampton Vickers, age 4, bound to Edward Cross of Hempstead, Arkansas until the age of 21.

December 16, 1867. Susan Brunson, age 9, bound to Robert Brunson of Hempstead, Arkansas until the age of 18.

January 18, 1868. Maxie Jordan (orphan girl), age 10, bound to Mrs. Sarah Jordan of Hempstead, Arkansas until the age of 18.

February 24, 1868. Emmett Parram, age 12, bound to Richard Booker of Hempstead, Arkansas until the age of 21.
