Freedmen's Bureau Indenture of Apprenticeship - Hardeman County

Indentures of apprenticeship were preprinted or hand written forms giving pertinent data concerning the contractual parties, dates of apprenticeship, and including a statement of the obligations and responsibilities of each party.


Know all Men by These Presents,

     THAT WE, W. W. McCosley , Jas. Richardson, & Jas. Watson all of the County of Hardiman, State of Tennessee, do hereby acknowledge ourselves indebted to the United States of American in the sum of five hundred dollars, for the payment of which, well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, our heirs, executors and administrators, jointly and severally, firmly by these presents, sealed with our seals and dated this 8th day of Dec, 1865.
     The Condition of the Above Obligation is Such That, whereas the above bound W. W. McCosley has this day had Jos. McCosley bound to him as an apprentice by the Government Agent of said County, and has entered into indentures of apprenticeship with said Agent. Now if the said W. W. McCosley shall well and truly comply with the contract by him made with the Agent concerning the said apprentice and shall faithfully and honestly discharge all his duties to said apprentice, then this obligation is to be void, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue.

Know All Men By These Presents:

     THAT I, JOHN D. USSERY, Agent R. F. & A. L. for Hardiman County, State of Tennessee, and in his behalf, do hereby bind Jos. McCosley, an orphan, of the age of eight years, to W. W. McCosley with him to live and work as an apprentice until he attains the age of twenty one years, during which time the said Jos. McCosley shall obey the lawful commands, and faithfully serve the said W. W. McCosley and he in all respects subject to his authority and control according to law, and his duty as his apprentice.

     And the said W. W. McCosley on his part covenants that he will instruct and teach the said Jos. McCosley in the trade and occupation of farming and to read, write and cypher to simple proportion or cause the same to be done, if the said apprentice have sufficient capacity, and he will also constantly have sufficient diet, lodging, washing and apparel for said named and all other necessaries suited to an apprentice both in sickness and in health and also to take care of his morals and treat him with humanity, and at the end of his apprenticeship will give him one hundred dollars & suit of clothes not to cost over forty dollars. And the said W. W. McCosley also binds himself that he will not remove the said apprentice from the County of Hardiman without having first obtained the consent of the apprentice and the Government Agent of said County.

     Know all Men by These Presents, that R. L. Lightfoot of the County of Hardiman, State of Tennessee held and firmly bound to the United States of American in the sum of one hundred fifty dollars, for the payment of which I bind my heirs, executors and administrators, firmly, by these presents, in this contract: That I am to furnish the persons, whose names are subjoined (freed laborer), Quarters, Fuel, substantial and healthy Rations, all necessary Medical Attendance and Supplies in case of sickness, and the amount set opposite their respective names per month, during the continuation of this contract--the laborers to be paid in full before the final disposal of the crop which is to be raised by them on Lightfoot plantation, in the County of Hardiman, State of Tennessee.
