Freedmen's Bureau Indenture of Apprenticeship - Dyer County

Indentures of apprenticeship were preprinted or hand written forms giving pertinent data concerning the contractual parties, dates of apprenticeship, and including a statement of the obligations and responsibilities of each party.

     This agreement made this 1st day of February 1866, by and between Tom W. Neal of Dyer County, Tennessee, of the first part and Wilie B. Tipton, agent of the Freedmen's Bureau for said County, of the other part, Witnesseth

     That said Neal (in consideration of the fact that said Tipton has bound unto him a freed boy, Anthony Gordon, now about twelve years old, to serve said Neal until the age of twenty-one) binds himself to manage and control said boy-to care for his civility, industry and morality. To nurse him comfortably-to treat him with proper kindness and humanity-to educate him to read if he be capable-and if the boy serve him faithfully, obediently and respectfully to the end of his said term, give said boy when of age a genteel suit of clothing complete and one hundred dollars in cash to begin the world with.

                                Witness our hands and seals this 1st day of February A. D. 1866.

                                                                      Tom W. Neal {seal}
