County: Bedford. Assailants: ½ Dozen white youths. Injured: Adam Mosely (col'd). Date: Feby. 67. Nature of attack: Shot. Comments: No action has been taken by the civil authorities in this case.

County: Bedford or Lincoln. Assailants: Lacy Bobo, E. Bobo & Doak Bly. Injured: Edmund Green (col'd). Date: August 1867. Nature of attack: Shot at. Comments: Lacy Bobo & Bly were both fined by the Magistrate.

County: Cannon. Assailant: Unknown. Injured: Sarah Martin (col'd). Date: 2nd July 1867. Nature of attack: Raped & murdered. Comments: This poor girl was 14 years. Raped & murdered & no clue to the perpetrators of this diabolical outrage.

County: Cannon. Assailant: Jim Majors. Injured: Ann Fletcher. Date: July 1867. Nature of attack: Beat. Comments: A warrant for Majors arrest was issued by the officers & could not find him.

County: Coffee. Assailants: Three white men unknown. Injured: Zarey Ordman. Date: Dec 1866. Nature of attack: Beat & shot at. Comments: No clue whatever as to the identity of the guilty party.

County: Coffee. Assailants: Young white men unknown. Injured: Ann Whittaker & Julia Oats. Date: January 1867. Nature of attack: Tore down house. Comments: Some of the guilty party were arrested but acquitted.

County: Coffee. Assailants: James Taylor & others. Injured: Freedmen. Date: January 1867. Nature of attack: Shooting. Comments: Taylor fled & no steps taken by the civil authorities for his arrest.

County: Davidson. Assailant: J. E. Scruggs. Injured: Peter Ransom. Date: Oct 1865. Nature of attack: Wounded. Comments: Scruggs was arrested & released & subsequently fined by the Bureau.

County: Davidson. Assailant: J. W. Thompson. Injured: Ben Fleming & Levi Thompson (col'd). Date: Nov 1865. Nature of attack: Shot at. Comments: Thompson was fined by the Bureau.

County: Davidson. Assailant: William Kinningham. Injured: Simon Rutledge (col'd). Date: Nov 1865. Nature of attack: Wounded. Comments: Kinningham was fined by the Bureau.

County: Davidson. Assailant: Isaac Davis. Injured: Elizabeth Hatchet, a young col'd girl. Date: Sept 1866. Nature of attack: Raped. Comments: Davis is still at large defying arrest.

County: Davidson. Assailant: W. C. Owens. Injured: Meshack May (col'd). Date: April 1867. Nature of attack: Killed. Comments: Owens is still at large defying arrest.

County: Davidson. Assailant: J. B. Edwards. Injured: A. Jones (col'd). Date: May 1867. Nature of attack: Wounded. Comments: Edwards was fined $50.00 by the Recorder.

County: Davidson. Assailant: Catherine Connelly. Injured: John Ivy (col'd). Date: May 1867. Nature of attack: Wounded. Comments: Catherine Connelly is at large upon bail of $1000.00.

County: Davidson. Assailant: Berry West. Injured: Sophia Hobbs (col'd). Date: May 1867. Nature of attack: Crippled. Comments: West was fined $50.00.

County: Davidson. Assailant: Bill Redick. Injured: Sam Craighead (col'd). Date: 1867. Nature of attack: Fractured skull. Comments: Redick was fined $24.00 & Craighead $29.00.

County: Davidson. Assailant: White men. Injured: Col'd woman. Date: March 1867. Nature of attack: Rape. Comments: A true bill of indictment was found by the Grand Jury.

County: Davidson. Assailant: J. B. Edmonds, Policeman. Injured: A. Jones (col'd). Date: May 1867. Nature of attack: Shot. Comments: Edmonds was a policeman had Jones under arrest the latter tried to make escape when he was shot at by the former. Edmonds was arraigned before Recorder & fined $50.00.

County: Davidson. Assailant: Funston, Detective. Injured: Ranson Chatmon. Date: June 20, 1867. Nature of attack: Killed. Comments: As the officer Funston acted in accordance with his duty, no action has been taken by the authorities.

County: Davidson. Assailant: Unknown. Injured: James Drake & wife Eliza (col'd). Date: Oct 1867. Nature of attack: Murder, wounded. Comments: The two Crockets were arrested, tried, but proved an alibi to the satisfaction of all parties.

County: Dickson. Assailant: Robert Faith. Injured: Joe Johnson (col'd). Date: May 1867. Nature of attack: Assault. Comments: Faith was tried & fined $5.00 before the Recorder.

County: Franklin. Assailant: Pyrim Saunders. Injured: Strambler (col'd), Beane (col'd). Date: 1867. Nature of attack: Assault shooting. Comments: Warrants were issued against the guilty parties but the officers report that they cannot be found.

County: Franklin. Assailant: T. J. Lockhart. Injured: Ned Farris (col'd). Date: May 1867. Nature of attack: (blank). Comments: These two boys were playing which resulted in an altercation when Ferris rec'd a blow from Lockhart which resulted in his death. Lockhart was tried & acquitted.

County: Giles. Assailant: Michael Dougherty. Injured: King Pedan (col'd). Date: August 1866. Nature of attack: Wound. Comments: Warrant was issued against Dougherty & fined $5.00 & costs.

County: Giles. Assailant: Capt. Whitfield. Injured: Wife of Chas. P. Whitfield (col'd). Date: July 5th, 1866. Nature of attack: Assault. Comments: Complaint was made to a Magistrate but nothing done.

County: Giles. Assailants: John Gilliam, Jack Kieth & others. Injured: Dudley Kimbrough (col'd). Date: July 7, 1866. Nature of attack: Murder. Comments: The accused were held to bail in the sum of $6000.00 .

County: Giles. Assailant: John Ezell. Injured: Molly Ezell (col'd). Date: August 16th, 1866. Nature of attack: Assault. Comments: John Ezell pleaded guilty & was fined $2.00 and costs.

County: Giles. Assailant: Robert A. Mitchell. Injured: Dolly Whirls. Date: August 23rd, 1867. Nature of attack: (blank). Comments: Robert Mitchell was arrested & held to bail.

County: Giles. Assailant: Unknown. Injured: Child of A. Bell (col'd). Date: Sept 3, 1867. Nature of attack: Shot thru shoulders. Comments: The child being too young was unable to identify the villain.

County: Giles. Assailant: James Baily. Injured: Margaret Baily. Date: Sept 28, 1866. Nature of attack: Beat. Comments: Complaint was made before a Magistrate but nothing done.

County: Giles. Assailant: David Reynolds. Injured: Col'd woman. Date: Sept 15, 1866. Nature of attack: Assault. Comments: Reynolds was arrested & fined $25.00 by Esq. Abernathy.

County: Giles. Assailant: William Keeling. Injured: Caroline Hastings (col'd). Date: Sept 29, 1866. Nature of attack: Cut in head. Comments: Keeling was arrested & fined.

County: Giles. Assailant: Robert Rhodes. Injured: Squire Rivers (col'd). Date: Nov 7, 1867. Nature of attack: Killed. Comments: Robert Rhodes was held on bail of $2000. Nothing done.

County: Giles. Assailant: William Kennedy. Injured: Louis Kennedy (col'd). Date: Nov 18, 1867. Nature of attack: Whipped. Comments: The parties making the assault were arrested & fined.

County: Giles. Assailants: Two white men unknown. Injured: Robert Taylor (col'd). Date: Sept 29, 1866. Nature of attack: Murder. Comments: No effort was made by civil authorities to find out who were the murderers.

County: Giles. Assailant: Lucius Suttle. Injured: James Martin (col'd). Date: Nov 26, 1866. Nature of attack: Shot at & beaten. Comments: Suttle was arrested and fined $50.00 and costs.

County: Giles. Assailants: George N. Wright, Frank Bennet & John Belcherth. Injured: Harrison Hughes (col'd). Date: August 1, 1866. Nature of attack: (blank). Comments: The parties not being identified nothing was done in the case.

County: Giles. Assailant: Seaborn Joiner. Injured: Lewis Hughes. Date: March 23, 1866. Nature of attack: Murder. Comments: Joiner was arrested tried before Circuit Court & acquitted.

County: Giles. Assailants: Robbers & thieves. Injured: Morgan Edmundson (col'd). Date: January 30, 1867. Nature of attack: Robbery. Comments: No arrest made in this case. The col'd man was robbed of $75.00.

County: Giles. Assailants: Ku Klux Klan. Injured: Stanhope Body, George Crittendon, Walter Scott, Minty Burkley. Date: July 5, 1868. Nature of attack: Threatened to kill them. Comments: None.

County: Giles. Assailants: Ku Klux Klan. Injured: Minty Burkley. Date: July 5, 1868. Nature of attack: Killed. Comments: As the murder was committed by the Ku Klux Klan who travel in disguise no legal action has been taken as none of them could be recognized.

County: Grundy. Assailants: Tom & John McCanlis alias McCann. Injured: Jake Brown (col'd). Date: 15th May 1867. Nature of attack: Outrage. Comments: No action has been taken in this case.

County: Humphreys. Assailant: Warren Davis (col'd). Injured: Jordan McMillan (col'd). Date: June 1867. Nature of attack: (blank). Comments: Warren Davis was arrested & fined $25.00 & costs.

County: Humphreys. Assailant: Pleasant Stribling. Injured: Athile (col'd). Date: 1867. Nature of attack: Ill treatment. Comments: Stribling has brutally treated this col'd woman & child for years keeping them in a hen house. He Stribling will have to stand his trial at the criminal court a true bill having been found against him by the Grand Jury.

County: Marshall. Assailant: Ku Klux Klan. Injured: Sewil Stegold. Date: July 5, 1868. Nature of attack: Assault. Comments: The Ku Klux Klan took him from his house and threatened to hang him, also beat him with a leather strap. Had to leave the place for fear of getting killed.

County: Maury. Assailants: Ku Klux Klan. Injured: Melinda Gregory & Spencer Gregory (col'd). Date: July 5, 1868. Nature of attack: Driven off by threat of violence in case of refusal. Comments: The Ku Klux Klan drove them from the farm they were working on, and threatened to kill all colored men who voted for Brownlow.

County: Maury. Assailants: Ku Klux Klan. Injured: Pleasant Hillman. Date: July 5, 1868. Nature of attack: Attacked his house. Comments: The Ku Klux Klan attacked his house and threatened to kill him. He and several other colored men gathered on the outskirts of the town (Columbia) where they were attacked by the Ku Klux Klan. They fought all night and left next morning for fear of being assassinated.

County: Montgomery. Assailants: Elesha Stanley, Tobe Ring & others. Injured: Solomon Adams (col'd). Date: Dec 1866. Nature of attack: (blank). Comments: Stanley, Ring & others were tried for burning Adams' house & acquitted.

County: Montgomery. Assailants: Black. Injured: Stephen Cole (col'd). Date: April 19, 1867. Nature of attack: Shot. Comments: Black was arrested & held to bail in the sum of $1000.00.

County: Montgomery (Clarksville). Assailant: J. M. Manners. Injured: Doe Moore (col'd). Date: April 1867. Nature of attack: Assaulted. Comments: Moore got from the J. P. one cent damages.

County: Montgomery. Assailant: Avant. Injured: Millie Carter (col'd). Date: Sept 1866. Nature of attack: Beaten. Comments: Nothing was reported in this case.

County: Montgomery. Assailant: D. J. Usury. Injured: Minty Usury (col'd). Date: May 1867. Nature of attack: Beaten. Comments: This case was compromised.

County: Montgomery. Assailant: Thomas Morgan. Injured: Mary Whitfield (col'd). Date: May 1867. Nature of attack: Assault. Comments: This case was compromised on payment of all monies due Mary &c.

County: Montgomery. Assailant: B. Gray. Injured: Meredith Townsend (col'd). Date: May 1867. Nature of attack: Shot. Comments: This case was compromised as Townsend was not dangerously wounded by B. Gray paying $25.-

County: Montgomery. Assailant: Unknown. Injured: John Watkins (col'd). Date: Sept 1867. Nature of attack: (blank). Comments: Watkins was accused of some desperate act & his pursuers were about to shoot when they were stopped by a policeman. Watkins was then given up to them & taken to Todd Co., Ky.

County: Montgomery. Assailant: Dr. William Shelby. Injured: Crea Perkins (col'd). Date: Sept 1867. Nature of attack: Assault. Comments: Suit has already commenced in this case.

County: Montgomery. Assailant: Thomas Fester. Injured: James Leavitt (col'd). Date: Oct 1867. Nature of attack: Assault. Comments: Warrant has been issued for the arrest of Fester.

County: Montgomery. Assailant: James Bird. Injured: Monroe Whitlock (col'd). Date: Oct 1867. Nature of attack: Assault. Comments: Warrant has been issued for the arrest of Bird.

County: Montgomery. Assailant: Unknown. Injured: Richard Johnson (col'd). Date: Oct 1867. Nature of attack: Murder. Comments: Johnson was murdered near Davy's Mill. No clue to the party who committed this foul murder or their whereabouts.

County: Montgomery. Assailant: George Hargrave. Injured: George Roberts. Date: May 1868. Nature of attack: Assault. Comments: The Grand Jury being in session at the time the matter was referred to them and Hargrave is now awaiting his trial in the Circuit Court of Montgomery County.

County: Overton. Assailant: R. Langford. Injured: Freedman. Date: Sept 1866. Nature of attack: Murder. Comments: No inquiry has been made by the civil authorities in this case.

County: Rutherford. Assailant: Mrs. M. A. F. White. Injured: William, orphan boy (col'd). Date: Oct. 1866. Nature of attack: Ill treatment. Comments: The affidavits of witnesses were presented by the court but not accepted as evidence in the case as Mrs. White was absent when they were taken. This case was therefore dropped.

County: Rutherford. Assailant: Lowry. Injured: George Ganes (col'd). Date: Oct. 1866. Nature of attack: Stabbed. Comments: The boy was directed to appear before a justice of the peace & get a warrant for the arrest of Lowry but failed to do so.

County: Rutherford. Assailant: James White. Injured: Jacob Jarret (col'd). Date: Oct. 1866. Nature of attack: Wounded. Comments: Jacob Jarret (col'd) accepted a bribe not to prosecute White.

County: Rutherford. Assailant: Enoch Dickson. Injured: Col'd Woman (unknown). Date: Oct. 1866. Nature of attack: Beating. Comments: Warrant for the arrest of Dickson was taken out a& given to a Deputy Sheriff who never served it.

County: Rutherford. Assailant: Mrs. White. Injured: Col'd laborers. Date: 1867. Nature of attack: Contract. Comments: Judgment was rendered against the col'd men for some 200 or 300 dollars and their cotton levied on. The matter was subsequently compromised.

County: Rutherford. Assailant: Allen Bros. & White Bros. Injured: J. D. Wilson, Esq, Col'd laborers. Date: Feby 1867. Nature of attack: Shot at a col'd man. Comments: The Allens & Whites shot at a Negro and raised a disturbance with the col'd people at Mr. Wilson's by breaking into their cabins & cutting them (2) across the throat & stabbing Mr. Wilson severely----The Allens left the Country. The Whites were arrested & tried but it was found that the evidence against them was not so strong as at first supposed. They were therefore acquitted & sent to their homes.

County: Rutherford. Assailant: Ellis (soldier). Injured: A white boy. Date: 1866. Nature of attack: Killed. Comments: The continuance of this case was secured on the grounds of being unable to find witnesses. (sentenced to 5 years in the Penitentiary)

County: Rutherford. Assailant: W. H. Gilford. Injured: Steven Tilford, col'd, Deaf Mute. Date: (blank). Nature of attack: Said Stephen was former slave of W. H. Tilford & the County Court unjustly bound him to his former master for 12 months.

County: Rutherford. Assailant: Lewis Scoby (col'd). Injured: Joe Randolph (col'd). Date: June 1867. Nature of attack: Assault. Comments: Scoby has not been arrested & his whereabouts unknown by the civil authorities. No pursuit or attempt to arrest was made.

County: Rutherford. Assailant: Cicero Layhew. Injured: W. Nelson (col'd). Date: Sept 1867. Nature of attack: Shot. Comments: Several attempts were made by the officer to issued the warrant on Layhew but without effect.

County: Sinclair. Assailant: Ku Klux Klan. Injured: Leander Wright, Henry McDaniel, Nathan Harris. Date: July 5, 1868. Nature of attack: Driven off by threat of violence in case of refusal. Comments: The Ku Klux Klan drove them from the farm they were working on, and threatened to kill all colored men who voted for Brownlow.

County: Sumner. Assailant: James Price. Injured: Powell (col'd). Date: 1866. Nature of attack: Killing. Comments: Price was arrested & brought to trial but no witnesses appeared against him. Was discharged-

County: Sumner. Assailant: James Price. Injured: Stanford Willis (col'd). Date: Oct 21, 1866. Nature of attack: House burning. Comments: this was case was tried twice. The first trial Price was found guilty, but the second acquitted him.

County: Sumner. Assailant: Dr. L. B. Moulton or Walton. Injured: Eliza Ellison (col'd). Date: Dec 1866. Nature of attack: Murder. Comments: Dr. Walton or Moulton surrendered himself to a Justice of the Peace and acquitted.

County: Sumner. Assailant: Col'd boy. Injured: Col'd boy. Date: 1866. Nature of attack: Death. Comments: A difficulty occurred between the two boys in the employ of Mr. J. E. Bell resulting in the death of one of them by a blow on the head with a stick. No investigation.

County: Sumner. Assailants: Robert & Hester Webb & others. Injured: Irvin Powell, Freedman. Date: 1866. Nature of attack: Murder. Comments: The trial of this case was postponed. Subsequently acquitted.

County: Sumner. Assailant: Dick Love. Injured: Nancy Elliot (col'd). Date: June 1867. Nature of attack: Assault. Comments: Nancy Elliot did not appear against Love. The latter paid costs.

County: Sumner. Assailant: Trimble. Injured: Randall (col'd). Date: June 1867. Nature of attack: Assault. Comments: This case was brought before a J. P. but dismissed.

County: Sumner. Assailant: James Haynes. Injured: Rose Maryum. Date: July 1867. Nature of attack: Assault. Comments: A warrant was issued but not returned (let off with costs).

County: Sumner. Assailants: Shie brothers, Ely and Jim. Injured: Nelson Franklin & John Odim (son) (col'd). Date: August 20, 1867. Nature of attack: Murder, wounded. Comments: The Shie brothers were tried before a community court & found guilty of the charges preferred & placed in jail to await trial before the criminal court-said trial took place in Gallatin where they were most unjustly acquitted.

County: Warren. Assailant: Archibald Nunnelly. Injured: Daniel Wardley (col'd). Date: March 1866. Nature of attack: Murder. Comments: Nunnelly was arrested & placed in jail but escaped & has not been rearrested.

County: White. Assailant: F. E. Pope. Injured: Phebe Snodgrass. Date: 1866. Nature of attack: Whipped. Comments: Was acquitted.

County: Williamson. Assailant: Henry Jackson. Injured: Peyton Sam & Margaret Ann (col'd). Date: 1867. Nature of attack: Ill treatment. Comments: The boy Peyton Sam was found by his mother "Selah" in a most pitiable condition owing to the brutal treatment of Jackson, his feet were so frozen that all the toes on one foot & part of the large toe on the other rotted off & was beaten also by Jackson until he became senseless & otherwise most brutally treated.

County: Wilson. Assailant: Ligon. Injured: Freedman. Date: 1866. Nature of attack: Murder. Comments: This case was tried before the Circuit Court & (illegible) the Judges charge to the contrary----the murderer was unjustly acquitted.

County: Wilson. Assailant: Frank Miller. Injured: J. Miller (col'd). Date: April 1866. Nature of attack: Murder. Comments: This case was compromised on payment of $500.00 to the widow.
