Freedmen's Bureau Indenture of Apprenticeship - Dickson
County
Indentures of apprenticeship were preprinted or hand
written forms giving pertinent data concerning the contractual parties, dates of
apprenticeship, and including a statement of the obligations and responsibilities of each
party.
This Indenture, made
the 6th day of February Eighteen Hundred and 66, between Riley Collin,
of the age of 14 years on the 4th day of March last, of _________ of the County
of Dickson State of Tennessee, of one part, and M. E. Malone of the County of
Dickson State of Tennessee, of the other part, witnesseth that the said Riley
Collin by and with the consent of the said A. P. Nicks, Supt. D Co., his guardian
signified by his signature affixed to this indenture, and by free will and consent of the
said Riley Collin hath placed and bound himself apprentice to the said M.
E. Malone to learn the trade or business of Household & Farming and with the said
M. E. Malone to dwell, continue and serve from the date hereof until the said Riley
Collin shall have attained the age of twenty-one years, which will be on the 4th
day of March Eighteen Hundred and 78: during all of which time the said apprentice shall
well and faithfully serve his said master, keep his secrets and obey his lawful commands.
He shall do no damage to his master, nor willfully suffer it to be done by others, and if
any to his knowledge is intended he shall give his master immediate notice thereof. He
shall not play at cards, dice, or any unlawful game. He shall not contract matrimony
during said term, nor absent himself from the service of his said master, nor haunt or
frequent taverns, tippling houses, nor gaming houses; but in all things and at all times
demean and conduct himself as a good and faithful apprentice towards his said master
during the whole time aforesaid.
And the said M. E.
Malone covenants and agrees with the said A. P. Nicks Supt. B.R.F. & A. L. that he
will teach and instruct the said Riley Collin or cause him to be taught and
instructed in the best and most complete way and manner that he can in the trade or
business of Household & Farming with all things belonging thereto: and that he will
find and allow to the said apprentice good and suitable meat, drink, washing, lodging,
suitable apparel for working and holy days, and all other things fit, convenient and
proper for an apprentice during the term aforesaid.
And will also teach to
the said apprentice, or cause to be taught, within said term, to read and write and the
ground rules of Arithmetic and the Rule of Three, and at the expiration of said term will
give unto the said Riley Collin two new suits of clothes suitable to his
condition and twenty dollars in money.

FREEDMEN'S LABOR CONTRACT - DICKSON COUNTY
This indenture made and
entered into this the 18th day of February, 1866, between B. B. Eskridge
of the County of Crittendon, State of Arkansas, of the first part and certain below named
Freedmen of the second part.
Witnesseth, that the parties
of the second part agree and bind themselves to labour upon the plantation of said
Eskridge until 1st day of January 1867. That they will be faithful in the
performance of any labour that may be required by said Eskridge or his agent, and obey all
reasonable orders for the below named considerations, to wit, that said Eskridge bind
himself and his heirs to give each Freedmen a proration on the one half nett proceeds of
the cotton crop (it is understood that not over 2 acres of corn per hand). That he will
furnish quarters, fuel and pay Doctors bills. Said Freedmen to pay for all personal
supplies, at cost price. Said Eskridge to furnish on his own account Teams, farming
implements and forage. The issue of Rations not to exceed 3 ½ lbs. of Pork or Bacon, 1
pint of Molasses, and 1 peck of meal per week. It is further understod that all lost time
shall be deducted according to the prorata of each in proceeds of crop. When it becomes
necessary to discharge any of the below named Freedmen, by reason of bad behavior or
indolence, he or she shall be paid at the rate of $15 per month for men and $11 for women.
