Freedmen's Bureau Indenture Bonds for Rutherford County, Tennessee

Indentures of apprenticeship were preprinted or hand written forms giving pertinent data concerning the contractual parties, dates of apprenticeship, and including a statement of the obligations and responsibilities of each party.


This Indenture, made the 18th day of January Eighteen Hundred and 66, between Edwin Crouch, of the age of 15 years on the 1st day of January last, of Rutherford, of the County of Rutherton, State of Tennessee, of one part, and George Daniel of the County of Rutherton State of Tennessee, of the other part, witnesseth that the said Edwin Crouch by and with the consent of the said A. P. Nicks, Supt. D Co., his guardian signified by his signature affixed to this indenture, and by free will and consent of the said Riley Collin hath placed and bound himself apprentice to the said George Daniel to learn the trade or business of Household & Farming and with the said George Daniel to dwell, continue and serve from the date hereof until the said Edwin Crouch shall have attained the age of twenty-one years, which will be on the 1st day of January Eighteen Hundred and 73: during all of which time the said apprentice shall well and faithfully serve his said master, keep his secrets and obey his lawful commands. He shall do no damage to his master, nor willfully suffer it to be done by others, and if any to his knowledge is intended he shall give his master immediate notice thereof. He shall not play at cards, dice, or any unlawful game. He shall not contract matrimony during said term, nor absent himself from the service of his said master, nor haunt or frequent taverns, tippling houses, nor gaming houses; but in all things and at all times demean and conduct himself as a good and faithful apprentice towards his said master during the whole time aforesaid.

And the said George Daniel covenants and agrees with the said A. P. Nicks Supt. B.R.F. & A. L. that he will teach and instruct the said Edwin Crouch or cause him to be taught and instructed in the best and most complete way and manner that he can in the trade or business of Household & Farming with all things belonging thereto: and that he will find and allow to the said apprentice good and suitable meat, drink, washing, lodging, suitable apparel for working and holy days, and all other things fit, convenient and proper for an apprentice during the term aforesaid.

And will also teach to the said apprentice, or cause to be taught, within said term, to read and write and the ground rules of Arithmetic and the Rule of Three, and at the expiration of said term will give unto the said Edwin Crouch two new suits of clothes suitable to his condition and twenty dollars in money.

March 9, 1866. Dock Duffer, age 14 on the 4th of July last, of Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, bound to H. P. Keeble of Rutherford County with the consent of his mother, Louisa Duffer, until the age of 21.

March 19, 1866. Solomon Mathis, age 15, of the County of Franklin, bound to Moses March of the County of Rutherford until the age of 21.

April 16, 1866. Andrew Bentley, age 7 on the 1st of January last, of Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, bound to J. J. Lawing of Rutherford County until the age of 21.

April 16, 1866. William Willis, age 11 on the 1st of January last, of Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, bound to J. J. Lawing of Rutherford County until the age of 21.

April 26, 1866. Rebecca Florida, age 9 on the 1st of January last, of Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, bound to J. E. Morrison of Rutherford County until the age of 18.

April 24, 1866. Frank Jones, age 6 on the 1st of January last, of Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, bound to F. C. Holdren of Rutherford County until the age of 21.

April 24, 1866. George Washington, age 12 on the 1st of January last, of Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, bound to John H. Adkinson of Rutherford County until the age of 21.

May 4, 1866. Melvin Daniels, age 12 on the 1st of January last, of Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, bound to Richard Daniel of Rutherford until the age of 21.

May 10, 1866. Frank Lytle, age 13 on the 1st of January last, of Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, to John Lewis Hall of Rutherford until the age of 21.

May 11, 1866. Rosa Spence, age 9 on the 1st of January last, of Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, to John Spence until the age of 19.

May 19, 1866. Amanda Elizabeth Tyler, age 10 on the 1st of January last, of Murfreesboro, Rutherford County, to Coleman Goodlaw of Rutherford County until the age of 19.
